Women Read The Apocrypha: The Books That Did Not Make It
This series, taught by Dr. Raysh Weiss, will lavish some much-deserved attention on a group of ancient Jewish texts which constitute one of the most overlooked literary collections of Jewish history. The deeply political process of canonization was a rough one, leaving many prospective texts out in the cold. These apocryphal stories, which will be read in English translation, range from the bizarre to the sublime. In anticipation of Chanukah, the primary focus will be Maccabees I, II, and III and the story of Judith, through which the historical conditions that fueled these narratives will be considered, with an eye to how they relate to Jewish history and to the present moment. Some major issues for discussion and exploration include the politics of canonization, risk-taking and bravery, and, in particular, the role of valiant women in these texts. (more)REGISTER

Spain, Maimonides, and His Turbulent Times
Andrée Aelion Brooks What do we really know about Maimonides that is not obscured by current veneration? This four-part mini-course will take a fresh look at fact vs. mythology. It will provide a background on Jewish life in Spain during the Middle Ages, the itinerant years of Maimonides' early life, his works in Jewish thought and medicine, a sampling of his remedies, and the controversies that erupted over his ideas after his death. Andrée Aelion Brooks is a popular JCC presenter. She is a former contributing columnist and news writer for the New York Times and author of several books on unusual aspects of Jewish history (one of which is in pre-production for a TV mini series). She is also an Associate Fellow, Yale University. (more)REGISTER
