NY Premiere "SHOES,"
+ Q&A and Reception w/ Director & Producer from Russia
Join Generation R for a special screening at the JCC's annual series of top films about the experiences of Jews during the Shoah. SHOES is the first part of a trilogy from award-winning emerging director Costa Fam. The evocative film follows the journey of a pair of shoes that starts in a shop window and runs all the way to Auschwitz. Dir. Costa Fam (Russia, 2013, 18 mins) Followed by Q&A and wine reception with director Costa Fam and producer Tatiana Dovidovskaya. The NY Premiere of SHOES is made possible by COJECO, a UJA-Federation of NY beneficiary agency. Readings from a New Wave of Russian American Writers
Join first-time novelists Vica Miller (Inga’s Zigzags) and Vicky Kuperman (The Russian Drop) as they read excerpts from their recently published debut novels. Heavy on romance, intrigue and humor, both novels feature a 28-year-old female protagonist whose hopes and dreams are all-too-often dashed by being a "foreigner in a strange land". Inspired by the PJ Library book, The Castle on Hester Street by Linda Heller, Castle in the Clouds celebrates the immigrant experience through the retelling of stories from our parents’ and grandparents’ generations. The state-of-the-art production is perfect for young audiences and adults alike, with an original musical score conceived of by some of the best professionals in the field. Performance is in Russian. ROMASHKA JR Generation Annual Rooftop Family Concert
New York's favorite gypsy dance party band performs its second annual multi-generational ROMASHKA JR family show on the rooftop as part of the Generation R family series. In addition to its ever-potent fare of gypsy, klezmer, folk, and retro music from Russia, Romania, the Balkans and beyond, Romashka will dig into Russian musical games and PJ Library book stories for the youngest Romashka fans. At full blast, Romashka has a violin, viola, accordion, guitar, trumpet, clarinet/saxophone, tuba, and percussion. Pack your dancing shoes.
