Shabbat Shabbang Friday Night Dinners: Layali El Andalus, Music from Morocco, Andalusia, and the Middle East
This passionate North African band is led by the talented Rachid Halihal, an expert oud player, who along with the Middle Eastern percussionist, David Buchbut , Moroccan percussionist Brahim Fribgane , the flute player Daphna Mor and accordion player Uri Sharlin bring to life a diverse repertoire of music including songs from Andalusia, Morocco, Tunisia, Yemen and the Middle East. Mimouna is an end of Passover celebration unique to the Jews of Morocco, gaining popularity in Israel and the United States. Join us for a fascinating evening discussing the origin of this North African holiday and its links to ancient Jewish magic, believed by Muslim neighbors to be especially effective. Magic spoke to the human need, throughout history, for protection and comfort, from the dangers and problems of our lives. A Moroccan festival meal will be served. Shabbat Shabbang Friday Night Dinners: Saffron & Steel - 2000 years of Moroccan Jewish Cuisine
The long and complex history of Jewish life in Morocco is reflected in its fragrant cuisine. During this discussion, we will look at how Jewish communities adopted the underlying indigenous Berber kitchen and how they responded to the Arab conquest and subsequent Islamic rulers, and then, most dramatically, the sudden impact of the Sephardi refugees following Spain's Edict of Expulsion.
